Stroke
Neurophysiotherapy following a stroke can be beneficial at any stage, acute or long term, even if you have only been mildly affected. We are able to work with you immediately on discharge from hospital, maximising your on-going recovery, towards the highest level of independence possible. It may take time, but hands on treatment at this stage can not only lead to you regaining activity, but also prevent you from developing more long term issues. Neurophysiotherapy aims to influence plasticity, the process through which the brain recovers or improves, by re-establishing a connection between the brain and the muscles.
Following a stroke there is generally much improvement in the first six months, however the process of recovery is on-going, often for several years. During this time, as people go back to daily living, they may develop issues with tight muscles, painful movement or compromised balance. As Neurophysiotherapists we can focus on these issues using hands on treatment to mobilise tissues and re-educate more normal ways of functioning.
Our individual approach, delivered by highly skilled and experienced therapists aims to keep you focussed on your goals and support you at every stage of the journey. For many people, the support of family and carers is invaluable through this time. As therapists, we are well placed to support them too.
